Soil cleanup might slow new Jekyll gas station

JEKYLL ISLAND — Soil contamination found after the demolition of Jekyll Island’s only gas station could mean visitors and residents will have to travel inland for fuel longer than expected.
Jones Hooks, director of the Jekyll Island Authority, says soil tests detected contaminants on the site where the 40-year-old canopies for gas stations was torn down in October. Officials suspect the cause was leaky pipes connected to fuel tanks.
The authority hopes to open a new gas station by this summer as part of a $170 million beach village development. The nearest service station is 12 miles away.
Jekyll Island spokesman Eric Garvey said it’s too soon to know whether construction of gas station canopies will be delayed. State environmental officials plan to assess the site in the coming weeks.
